How to Design Print-Ready Business Cards

Published by PostNet Denver

A business card is often the first tangible impression someone has of your brand, so getting the print file right matters. The most common mistake we see at PostNet Denver is files submitted without proper bleed. Bleed is the area beyond the trim line where your design extends so that after cutting there are no white edges. For business cards, set your bleed to at least 0.125 inches on all four sides. Most design tools like Adobe Illustrator, Canva, and Affinity Designer have a bleed setting in the document setup dialog.

Equally important is the safe zone -- the inner margin where all critical text and logos should stay. Keep essential content at least 0.125 inches inside the trim line. Text or logos that sit too close to the edge risk being clipped during the cutting process, even with precision cutters. A good rule of thumb: if you would be upset to see it partially cut off, move it inward.

When it comes to resolution, always design at 300 DPI (dots per inch) or higher. Images pulled from websites are typically 72 DPI and will appear blurry and pixelated when printed. If you are using photographs or detailed graphics, start with the highest-resolution source file available. Vector elements like logos and icons should remain in vector format whenever possible since they scale without losing quality.

Before exporting, convert all fonts to outlines (also called curves). This prevents font substitution issues when the file is opened on a different system. Export your final file as a press-ready PDF using the PDF/X-1a or PDF/X-4 preset. These presets flatten transparency, embed color profiles, and ensure compatibility with professional print workflows.
